چکیده

Based on the identification of 38 white dwarfs with halo kinematics, in a survey covering 10% of the sky near the south galactic pole, Oppenheimer et al. (1) argued that at least 2% of the dark matter in the Milky Way galaxy has now been detected directly. Put into context, the Oppenheimer et al. result implies that the stellar remnant mass of the halo may be comparable to that of the entire disk of the galaxy. If true, that finding has crucial consequences for understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. Careful examination of the results of Oppenheimer et al., however, leads us to conclude that they have overestimated that the density of white dwarfs with halo kinematics. Oppenheimer et al. (1) derived their local white dwarf density n via the 1/Vmax technique (2). The equation that applies for a survey covering 10% of the sky is

White dwarfs and Galactic dark matter

We discuss the recent discovery by Oppenheimer et al (2001) of old, cool white dwarf stars, which may be the first direct detection of Galactic halo dark matter. We argue here that the contribution of more mundane white dwarfs of the stellar halo and thick disk would contribute sufficiently to explain the new high velocity white dwarfs without invoking putative white dwarfs of the dark halo. Th...

Death of Stellar Baryonic Dark Matter Candidates

The nature of the dark matter in the Universe is one of the outstanding questions in astrophysics. In this talk, I address possible stellar baryonic contributions to the 50-90% of our Galaxy that is made of unknown dark matter. First I show that faint stars and brown dwarfs constitute only a few percent of the mass of the Galaxy. Next, I show that stellar remnants, including white dwarfs and ne...

Is Galactic Dark Matter White ?

We calculate the expected white dwarf luminosity functions and discovery functions in photometric passbands, if these stellar remnants provide a substantial fraction of the sought Galactic dark matter, as suggested on various observational grounds. We demonstrate the extremely rapid variation of the photometic signature of halo white dwarfs with time and thus the powerful diagnostic of white dw...

Russell Lecture: Dark Star Formation and Cooling Instability

Optically thin cooling gas at most temperatures above 30K will make condensations by pressure pushing material into cool dense regions. This works without gravity. Cooling condensations will flatten and become planar/similarity solutions. Most star formation may start from cooling condensations with gravity only important in the later stages. The idea that some of the dark matter could be prist...

Pure Hydrogen Model Atmospheres for Very Cool White Dwarfs

Microlensing events observed in the line of sight toward the LMC indicate that a significant fraction of the mass of the dark halo of the Galaxy is probably composed of white dwarfs. In addition, white dwarf sequences have now be observed in the HR diagrams of several globular clusters. Because of the unavailability of white dwarf atmospheres for Teff < 4000K, cooling time scales for white dwar...

Faint Blue Objects in the Hubble Deep Field–South Revealed: White Dwarfs, Subdwarfs, and Quasars

We explore the nature of the faint blue objects in the Hubble Deep Field South. We have derived proper motions for the point sources in the Hubble Deep Field South using a 3-year baseline. Combining our proper motion measurements with spectral energy distribution fitting enabled us to identify 4 quasars and 42 stars, including 3 white dwarf candidates. Two of these white dwarf candidates, HDFS ...
